Melbourne’s 30 metropolitan councils in partnership with the Victorian Government, have launched an important new campaign to help residents ‘Get it Right on Bin Night’ and to recycle to their full potential.
The campaign marks the first time the Victorian Government and local councils have joined together to implement a metropolitan-wide recycling campaign that uses consistent messages and tools.
The Minister for Environment and Climate Change Ryan Smith said that although Melburnians were great recyclers, on average up to 20 per cent of the waste in the household garbage bin was still incorrectly thrown away, instead of being recycled.
“This amounts to over 300,000 wheelie bins of recyclable material ending up in landfill every week,” he said. “By providing answers to some of the trickier recycling questions, the campaign will help Melburnians to get it right on bin night and make a real difference to the environment.”
The “Get it Right on Bin Night” campaign includes a website and advertising, as well as information and resources provided through local councils.
The campaign is a partnership between the Victorian Government, through Sustainability Victoria, the Metropolitan Waste Management Group, the Australian Packaging Covenant and metropolitan councils.
