The Waste Wise Local Government program is a practical, step-by-step program inspiring councils to minimise waste and maximise the efficient use of valuable resources in their day-to-day activities. This statewide initiative was developed by Sustainability Victoria and is currently managed by regional waste management groups, including the Metropolitan Waste Management Group.
The program offers certification to councils that make a commitment to reducing their waste and they can be certified at either Bronze, Silver or Gold levels based on their level of commitment and achievements. Joining Waste Wise is entirely voluntary and free of charge. Download an overview of the various levels of certification and their benefits (92KB)
The Metropolitan Waste Management Group is responsible for providing all levels of certification for Melbourne's 30 metropolitan councils. Certification is awarded for a two-year period and can be renewed each time using the action plan renewing table. Currently over 200 businesses and local councils have committed to the Waste Wise program in Victoria.
